HI !

By calculations:
2G ;
$220 = 80/voice + 12 tunnel +128 data
$3500 ~ 4200 = 2G phone value
Voice = 800~1000 mins.
Data = unlimited / 2G GPRS54k/Edge270kps speed

3G ;
$294.25 = 498 +18/sms - 221.75
$5958 = 3G iphone price (price+prep.+1st month)
Voice = 2200+1500 mins.
Data = unlimited / 3G GPRS to HSDPA/7.2m speed

Monthly difference;
~$74/month

Phone difference;
Paid $2458 = $5958-3500 for 8G
Paid $1758 = $5958-4200 for 16G

It means that you paid additional $1758~$2458 for the New iPhone 3G which including warranty and no need to hack, even you still want to hack.
And paid a additionally $74 per monthly.
THEN, you could have a new phone and a 3G speed unlimited data plan with much voice air time wow..... Is it good for you and yours?

I think the main motives to change to iPhone 3G are

(1) faster 3G network (but 3HK network is disappointing me)
(2) Internet surfing without blocking voice call
(3) GPS (although the google map HK details are not very good)
(4) official warranty and unlocked phone

If you think the price is a concern to you, don't buy it. Because you need to buy applications from app store in order to enhance the features in addition to the 3G data charge.

TKS for reply.

1) i use $128+$12(tunnel) now. Sometimes +easy plus $58/98.

Total about $198-248. (1 more year contract)

2) I usually use wi-fi, not GPRS/edge......

3) Need to buy lots of software for 3G. ( even SKETCHES selling @4.99).....

^~^

I really appreciate the detail analysis report on 2G vs 3G on their price and I would like to add one more point on it.
If you consider to have a more fashion, get a 3g iphone but when u paid for more fashion and up to date, at the same time you have to prepare to get an iphone which is cheaper in material, lower quality ( I mean finishing compared with 2g) as I have both of them (2g & 3g). I like much on the outlook at the first glance of 3g iphone. But when u look more close and you will find that 2g iphone is much more better in the finishing than 3g iphone.

seems the "marginal benefit" does not justify changing 2G to 3G....
